Roofing contractor safety and compliance in Cape Town

Roofing is work at height, and asbestos roofing is regulated work. This page sets out who holds each credential and what paperwork you’ll receive, company by company, so your safety officer, trustees or managing agent can check it.

Roof Direct is an owner-led business. Andre Smit or our foreman, Randall Swarts, oversees every job, and the standards below apply on factories, sectional title complexes and homes alike.

Our asbestos sister company’s registration

Roof Direct does not hold an asbestos registration. Asbestos removal and encapsulation is quoted and carried out by our sister company:

  • Company: Indi Maintenance Services (Pty) Ltd
  • Registration: Registered Asbestos Contractor (Type 2)
  • Certificate: 2025RAC/CI-180
  • Valid: 27 August 2025 to 26 August 2028
  • Registered under: the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and the Asbestos Abatement Regulations, 2020

Roof Direct quotes and installs your new roof, so you have one point of contact throughout.

What a Type 2 registration covers

Type 2 covers repair or encapsulation of asbestos cement products without surface preparation, and removal of asbestos cement products or asbestos insulating board. On a building, that means asbestos cement roof sheets, gutters, fascias and downpipes, and ceilings made of asbestos insulating board. See asbestos roof removal and our other asbestos services.

How to verify a registration

Ask for the certificate before work starts, and check three things: that the company named on it is the one doing the work, that the registration type covers the material involved, and that it hasn’t expired. You can confirm a contractor’s registration with the Department of Employment and Labour. We’ll send you a copy of Indi’s certificate on request.

What you receive

  • An itemised quote, with each part of the work priced separately and the guarantee terms written in.
  • A health and safety file on larger projects.
  • On asbestos projects: the plan of work you co-sign before the job, the disposal certificate from the registered asbestos disposal site, and the clearance certificate from the approved inspection authority. These asbestos documents carry Indi’s name.

Asbestos safety training

Held by: staff at both Roof Direct and Indi Maintenance Services.

The regulations require anyone working with asbestos to be trained for it. The asbestos work itself is carried out under Indi’s registration and Indi’s plan of work, in a demarcated regulated asbestos area, with the right respiratory protection and no power tools to cut, grind or drill asbestos cement.

Working-at-heights compliance

Held by: Roof Direct.

Our teams are working-at-heights compliant. Before a job starts, we plan how the roof will be reached, where people will work and how they’ll be protected, and on larger projects that plan goes into the safety file.

Rope access

Used by: Roof Direct, where scaffolding isn’t practical.

On tall facades, high parapets and box gutters, or above busy entrances, where scaffolding would block the site or take too long, we use rope access and explain it in the quote.

Health and safety files

Drafted by: Roof Direct, for larger projects.

A health and safety file sets out the risks on your site, the safe work methods, how work at height will be managed and who is responsible for what. Commercial clients, principal contractors and body corporates often need one before work can start.

What we don’t do

  • Other asbestos materials. Pipe lagging, sprayed insulation and other loose asbestos materials need a different class of registration, which Indi doesn’t hold. We’ll refer you to a contractor registered for that work.
  • Asbestos testing. Only an accredited laboratory test can confirm that a material contains asbestos. Testing and air monitoring are done by accredited laboratories and approved inspection authorities, not by us.

Where this matters most

These standards matter most on larger sites. See how we work for commercial and industrial clients and body corporates, or browse our roofing and waterproofing services.

Frequently asked questions

Who holds the asbestos registration on your projects?

Our sister company, Indi Maintenance Services (Pty) Ltd, holds it. Indi is a Registered Asbestos Contractor (Type 2), certificate 2025RAC/CI-180, valid until 26 August 2028. Roof Direct is not a registered asbestos contractor: we inspect and coordinate the project and quote and install the new roof, while Indi quotes the asbestos work and carries it out under its own registration.

What does a Type 2 asbestos registration cover?

A Type 2 registration covers repair or encapsulation of asbestos cement products without surface preparation, and removal of asbestos cement products or asbestos insulating board. In practice that means roof sheets, gutters, fascias, downpipes and asbestos ceiling boards. It doesn't cover pipe lagging, sprayed insulation or other loose asbestos materials, which need a different class of registration.

What is a health and safety file, and when is it needed?

A health and safety file is the set of documents that shows how a construction project will be run safely: the risk assessments, the safe work methods, how work at height is managed, and who is responsible for what. Clients often ask for one on larger or more complex projects. We draft one for larger projects and discuss what your site needs at the inspection.

Are your teams trained to work at heights?

Yes. Roof Direct's teams are working-at-heights compliant, which matters on every roof, from a single-storey house to a high factory. We plan how each roof will be accessed and worked on before the job starts, and where scaffolding isn't practical, such as on tall facades or high box gutters, we use rope access.

Can I see the registration certificate?

Yes. Ask us and we'll send you a copy of Indi Maintenance Services' registration certificate before you accept the quote, so your safety officer, managing agent or trustees can file it. The certificate is in Indi's name, because Indi holds the registration, and the plan of work and asbestos documents for your project carry Indi's name too.
